D'oh! The Simpsons Find a Home At Tufts

by Josh Belkin

What's the best part about college? Watching The Simpsons with dozens of other students, of course! One of the newest and most popular student organizations on campus - The No Homers Club - does just that.

The No Homers Club, aptly named from a reference in an episode, explores themes prevalent in the hit television show, The Simpsons. The show is often praised as being one of the most intelligent shows on television, with its biting satire and social commentary. The group and its members find plenty of material to enjoy. Holding regular meetings every other week, the group screens favorite episodes and discusses themes among the show. Past meetings have included discussions on the entertainment industry, Disney, the Kennedy Family, religion and government.

Students gather to watch and discuss The Simpsons every other week.

However, the setting is very informal and a lot of fun. Typically, about 50 students attend each meeting to enjoy a study break, complete with snacks and their favorite animated series, followed by the small discussion.

"It's a lot of fun, and also a great way to get away from homework for a little while," says club Co-President and Co-Founder Richard Kalman.

In addition, the group sponsors special events such as live screenings of the season premieres and finales in the campus center. These events have drawn very large crowds in the past. In the future group leaders hope to bring speakers to campus as well as expand their programming.

Founded at the beginning of 2001, the group already boasts a membership of nearly 300 students and large name recognition on campus. In fact, the group was recently voted in the student newspaper, The Tufts Daily, reader's poll the runner-up for best club on campus.

In addition to the No Homers Club, there is a wealth of other fun student groups out there for every interest. Other organizations include The Monty Python Society, Film Series and The Strategic Gaming Society, as well as many others. While you will have to study hard at Tufts, make sure to save some time for fun, too!
